EVERWILD

Privacy Policy

The short version

The sections below are the full policy. They control if anything in the short version is unclear.

1. Definitions

Personal Information means information that identifies You as a person: an email address, a chosen display name, an account identifier we created, or device and log data that can be linked to You.

Observation Data means the species, the photo or sound, the location You chose to make public, the time, and the metadata of a find. Observation Data You make public is shared, licensable content under the rights You grant in our Terms.

EVERWILD, We, and Us means the EVERWILD app and the team that operates it.

2. What we collect

About You. A random contributor ID we generate (not Your name). The explorer name You choose. Your email address, which You provide when You create Your account (required to save and sync Your finds). If You sign up with Google, Google also shares Your name, profile picture, and Google account identifier with us to set up the account. Device and app version, for support. If You join through another explorer's invite or share link, the referral connection (which contributor invited You), so we can credit them. We do not track Your real-world identity, contacts, or background location.

About a find. The photo or audio, the species name, the location at the moment of capture (read live from Your phone's GPS, not extracted from the image file), the accuracy of that reading, the time, an integrity hash, and the field-log fields You choose to add.

Automatic. Standard request logs (IP address, browser or app version, the page or endpoint you used, time of the request). These are used to operate the service, prevent abuse, and improve EVERWILD.

3. How we use it

We use what we collect to operate the app (capture, identify, save Your finds, run the Codex and community showcase), to identify species (Your photo and metadata are sent to AI services for identification and moderation), to keep the platform safe (moderation, fraud and spam prevention), to communicate with You (where You have asked), to credit contributions (showing who first documented a species in a region, and crediting explorers who invite new members), and to license aggregated Observation Data and images to research, conservation, and commercial partners under the licence You grant in our Terms of Use. That commercial licensing is the funding model that keeps EVERWILD free.

4. Who we share it with

We share data only with the partners we need to operate the service or that You opt into:

We do not sell Your account identity (name, email) or any squad live-location and presence data, and we never build or sell a movement trail of You. Find observations You make public, including their location, may be licensed to partners as described above and in our Terms; You can opt out at any time using the Do Not Sell or Share My Information control in Settings, under Manage my data. We may disclose information when required by law, court order, or to protect EVERWILD, our users, or the public.

5. Location privacy and sensitive species

EVERWILD uses an open-by-default location model. By default, a find's location is shown publicly at the position You logged it, so the community map reflects where wildlife is actually found, and that find data may be licensed as described in section 4. Public locations apply to finds logged after You accept this version of the policy; finds logged earlier remain coarsened.

You always see the exact locations of Your own finds. If You join a squad and choose to share, the members of that squad see the exact locations and finds You choose to share. Squad live-location is used only to connect Your group inside the app; it is ephemeral and is never published, licensed, or sold.

On the public Explore map's "view all" view, a find is shown as its species and location only, without the finder's explorer name, so the public map reflects where wildlife is found rather than who found it. Your explorer name is shown with a find only when You view Your own finds or share within Your squad, and where We deliberately credit contributions (the Activity feed of latest finds, and the credit to the first explorer to document a species). We do not attach Your name to a find's location on the public map.

For species that are rare, threatened, at-risk, or otherwise sensitive to location disclosure, we apply automatic protection based on conservation status. For these species we hide the find location entirely from the public map, the showcase, and any licensed dataset. Their locations are never published or licensed. You still see Your own sensitive finds, and a squad sees only the sensitive finds You choose to share. We may strengthen this protection at any time and will not weaken it without a public policy change.

6. Your rights

You have the following rights over Your Personal Information. To exercise any of them, open the in-app Manage my data page or email [email protected].

7. Legal bases (GDPR / UK GDPR)

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on the following bases: performance of a contract (operating the app You asked to use), legitimate interests (security, fraud and abuse prevention, improving EVERWILD), consent (marketing email and any clearly optional processing), and legal obligation (responding to lawful requests).

8. Retention

We keep Your account and Personal Information for as long as Your account is active. If You close Your account, we will remove Your Personal Information within 30 days of confirmation, except where we are legally required to keep it. Observation Data that has been contributed to the public record or to licensed datasets may be retained in anonymized form to preserve the integrity of the shared record.

9. Children

EVERWILD is intended for users aged 18 and older, or younger users with a parent or guardian's permission. We do not knowingly collect Personal Information from children under 13. If You believe a child under 13 has provided us with Personal Information, please contact [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.

10. Cookies and analytics

EVERWILD uses local browser storage (similar to cookies) to remember Your settings, Your Codex, and Your sign-in. We use only the standard request logs described in section 2 for analytics. We do not run third-party advertising trackers.

11. Security

Personal Information lives in a locked-down database and private storage. Service keys are held on our servers and are never embedded in the app on Your phone. No system is perfect; we do not warrant that data transmitted over the internet is always secure.

12. Cross-border data

EVERWILD runs on global cloud infrastructure (Cloudflare's edge, Supabase, Google). By using EVERWILD, You acknowledge that Your data may be transferred to and processed in countries other than Your country of residence, including the United States and the European Union.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. If a change is material, we will surface a notice in the app and ask You to acknowledge it. Continued use after a change means You accept it.

14. Contact

Privacy questions and data-rights requests: [email protected]. General contact: [email protected].
